Look at me: Discovering the little kid in the mirror

January 13, 2009

As a photographer of daily life, I am always on the lookout for my reflection: the better to photograph myself, my dear! And there's nothing better to enchant a child than his own reflection; even my six-year-old adores a good mirror. Here are some of the places I've found to look at me!:

  • Downtown windows. So many of the ground-level windows are brilliantly-mirrored; I like the ones on Taylor between 1st and 2nd avenues for some great, high-contrast reflection.
  • Airport bathrooms. How many photos have I taken of myself in airport bathrooms? Enough so I have a tag for it on flickr. And enjoying a row of mirrors is a great way to pass the time while you're waiting for a loved one's flight to arrive.
  • OMSI. There are a few mirror exhibits at OMSI; this one lets a child invert his reflection and then compare it to a flat reflection.
  • Helmet mirrors. Lots of kids in Portland, including my own, go by bike. Mirrors help them develop safe riding skills (and you can use them when you've got babes aboard to keep your eyes on the precious cargo).
  • Mud puddles. Don't forget; part of the joy of Portland's frequent rainy weather is that you can see yourself in every sparkling mud puddle. Look before you jump!
